5 Things I did to Spruce up the Main Bedroom!
It’s time to update your main bedroom
Is your master bedroom feeling outdated and in desperate need of a refresh? Are you constantly searching on Pinterest for ‘ideas to modernise a bedroom’, ‘how to easily update a bedroom on a budget’ or ‘the best way to style a bedroom’? We hear ya and have been there! That’s why today we are diving in deep and sharing 5 things that we did to spruce up our main bedroom.
These are 5 easy things that you can start to implement today and it will make a huge difference to your space.
Let’s start the main bedroom makeover!
Don’t delay it any longer! Start planning and putting into place your bedroom makeover.
Get Inspired
The first place to start is to get inspired! We created a vision board that detailed all the things we would like to incorporate into our room. This is where you can start too. Create a vision board while considering the following:
- What colours do you want to bring into the bedroom
- How do you want the bedroom to feel? Clean, spacious, luxurious?
- Do you want to get new light fittings?
- Have you decided on what textures or materials you would like to bring into the room
- Consider the windows and determine if they need new curtains or blinds.
- Is the flooring staying? or can you add a mat to create a cosy feel in the room?
The Main Bedroom – for me, needs to be comfortable, clean and cosy.
After we created our vision board we decided that our bedroom needs to be a place that we enjoy spending time in and get a good night sleep. It also needs to be completely toy-free (if you have children you will know what we mean).
Bedrooms need to be a relaxing and calming environment so when we brought our house and saw that the main bedroom was an extremely dark brown, we knew straight away that was the first thing on our list that had to go for that room.
Now that you have created your vision board, let’s get started!
Here are the 5 things that we did to spruce up the Main Bedroom (and you can do it too!):

Painted the bedroom
We were able to paint the bedroom before moving into the house which made the whole process so much easier as we did not have to move furniture around.
As you can see from the before photo we desperately had to get rid of the dark brown colour as it felt like a very unwelcoming room. So, we taped up the room, laid floor covering down to protect the carpet and painted the room a much lighter shade which has freshened the space up and provided an inviting feel to the room.  The colour used in the bedroom is called Resene Quarter Tea.
You can do it too
You can start with painting your bedroom. If you can, remove as much furniture out of the room as possible. Give the walls a wipe down, tape everything up and protect the flooring. Here are our ideal items to use when painting.
Installed new Curtains and Rails
Once the painting was complete we gave the room a clean up ready to start installing items. If you need some motivational cleaning tips click here.
Our previous curtains were a dark brown colour to match the dark brown walls so even though they were a beautiful quality curtain they were way too dark for us and didn’t go with our new lighter and brighter paint colour.
We decided to go with a light curtain colour to keep the room feeling fresh, clean and inviting. The curtains we choose are thermal lined so perfect for winter, and they are also a blackout curtain – ideal for those lighter mornings.

Amazon has Thermal Insulated Black Out Curtains that are available in a range of stunning colours that you must check out if you are on the lookout for new good quality blackout curtains.
The curtain rails that were here were ancient and again were …you guessed it, brown! So, to match the lighter colour scheme, we got new curtain rails in a lighter wood tone colour. You can decide whether you want a curtain rod system or a track system.

We haven’t been able to source a wood curtain pole identical to ours, but we have found one that is a trending item in many homes. The Bali Blinds Rod Set a popular choice and will suit any colour and style of blackout curtain. These curtain rods will suit curtains that are made with an eyelet, or you can purchase the sliding hooks.
Purchased new bedding, added cushions and a comforter
It is amazing what new bedding can do to a bed and a bedroom. We love beds to look inviting, comfy and cosy, don’t you? We also like them to have that luxury look and feel. Bed linens need to last, so we will spend a bit extra to get a higher thread count.
So many stores have regular specials and sales. Therefore, it can be a good idea to wait until those sales to buy new bedding if you are needing or wanting to replace everything.

Bed Throw – All bedding deserves to have a soft, and deluxe throw to give it that ultra-glam look. Our favourite is Pinzon Fux Fur Throw Blanket.
Bed Cushions – Okay, if you are anything like us you will love your bed cushions! We don’t care if we have to remove 20 of the things -we love them, and they have to go on our bed every single day! There are so many amazing cushions styles available one of our favourites to help you create a dreamy bedroom are these decorative cushions from Amazon.
Duvet Cover – We love neutral earthy-toned duvet covers in our room to match the wall colour, but our other choice is the Pinzon Sateen Hotel Duvet Cover to create that luxurious hotel look.
Made a headboard
Yup, we made our very own headboard to fit in with how we wanted the overall room to look.
Our headboard is an old wardrobe door (doors are so handy – if you have read 5 things I did in my Laundry Room, you will know what I mean – click here for that post).  We got some thick batting and material that we loved, and with a staple gun, we made our headboard. We love it – it gives such a cosy feeling, and in winter, it’s lovely to lean against while reading a book.

Added accessories to the room
We think accessories can add personality to any room; it doesn’t have to be much, just a few little things to give a room its final touches. We added one of my favourite scented candles (a must-have for any bedroom) Our favourite mags to read and a large canvas photo to help personalise the space a bit more.  Adding pictures to a bedroom is a great way to remind us of those special moments we have in life.
