5 Things I did to spruce up my Laundry Room!
We have an outside laundry room…
and when we first moved into our house it was pretty shabby, and I often hated doing laundry in it, which is no good when you have a family of 5 worth of washing.
So with a little bit of research on Pinterest and a very handy husband we did a few things (that are so easy you can do them too) to our laundry room to make washing a more pleasurable experience.
Does your Laundry room need an update?
Are you also searching for ideas on ways to refresh your laundry room? You have come to the right place as we will provide you with ideas and inspiration so you can start making your laundry room a delight to be in.
Get Inspired
The first place to start is to get inspired! We created a vision board that detailed all the things we would like to incorporate into our room. This is where you can start too. Create a vision board while considering the following:
- How much space do you have to play with
- What paint colours would you like to incorporate into the room
- Is there enough storage space
- Do you need to add any extra electrical sockets
- Do you want somewhere to fold or hang washing
Laundry room ideas
1) Painted the exterior door
The door into our laundry room was a brown/red colour which was not appealing. So, to make the laundry room appear more inviting, we painted the door a beautiful grey colour (which was the colour of all the trims on the outside of our house). Now when I look at the door, it screams “Freshness” and looks so much more inviting. The colour, if you are interested, is Resene Eighth Pravda.
If you have an external laundry you could look at doing the same. Add a pop of colour to create a clean and fresh space. If your internal laundry door is looking outdated consider painting it or refresh it with the existing paint.

2) Installed a bench
Believe it or not, our bench is an old door that we did not need.
It was the perfect length to fit in our laundry room. So, we grabbed a few cubby bookshelves like these from Amazon and attached the door to the top. We then placed an edging around the upper part of our table to give it a finished look (this still needs to be painted).
Originally we were going to paint the door/table a white colour, but then we came across a product that was a self-adhesive marble contact paper perfect for cabinets and tabletops. It is easy to keep clean and wipe down.
It can be a tad tricky to install, so be patient and take your time but it automatically gives a clean, fresh feeling.

3) Installed a rail
A super handy feature especially for things that need ironing or light drying.
If you have space, it is worth installing one of these. We used a surplus curtain rod and two brackets. Super easy and so useful! A hanging rod like this one from Amazon will be perfect!!
4) Hanging the dryer on the wall
Hanging the dryer on the wall is a game changer!!
Apart from it saving floor space, we find it convenient to be able to pull stuff straight out of the machine and up into the dryer.
Also, if we have had things in the dryer, we find it easier to be standing to pull the laundry out rather than always bending over.
We then can fold our laundry and place in all on the bench. If you can wall mount your dryer, it can be a great space-saving idea!
5) Laundry décor
A few inexpensive purchases made our laundry feel nice, clean and organized.
We got a laundry powder container and cleaning product holder. We made a place for lost socks (as we always have at least one with no friend) and a place for lost property!

These are really helpful ideas for people with laundry rooms. I love the repurposing of materials. Why buy new when what you have will work. I’ve never heard of wall hanging a dryer. Interesting concept.

So cute! My laundry room DESPERATELY needs help. Right now it’s used as storage too. One day we’ll get to it. But yours is so pretty! Nicely done.

I think Laundry Rooms are probably one of the last rooms on the list to get sorted – mine was a great storage space too. Thanks for your comments 🙂

The rail is a great idea! Keeps clothes from getting wrinkled!

I love what you did with your laundry room! We’re currently looking at moving into a bigger home and I”d love to do something like this xo

Thanks so much – it definitely has become a more functional space! 🙂

I have an indoor laundry room to house the washing machine & tumble dryer & a sink. Invaluable. I do like to iron in my bedroom though as I have lots of space in my bedroom and can put the clothes away easily. When I was in France I had a laundry room similar to yours though. Love the design & colour – looks lovely & fresh 😊

Thank you! Yes some days I wish mine was indoor rather than outside. But I am spoilt with the space of my laundry. 🙂

I’ve never, ever seen someone mount their dryer. That’s genius! My new laundry room is very small and will need stackables, but I hate the front loading washers. I’ll have to look into that! Thanks!

Hi Brittany – really? wow its so common here in NZ and it such a great way to save on space especially if you don’t want a front loader washer. Keep me posted as to what you end up doing in your Laundry! Thanks for visiting and your comments 🙂
