5 Things I did to spruce up my Herb Garden
The weather is getting warmer
So it is the perfect time to start giving the herb garden a tidy up!
How easy is it to spruce up a herb garden?
The answer to this question is super easy! Herb gardens have to be one of the easiest gardens to grow and look after. I am no way a professional gardener but this I can do and so can you!
What herbs can you plant in your garden
Decide what herbs are your favourites or suit the season you are currently in. Some of our favourite herbs are:
- Basil
- Parsley
- Sage
- Thyme
- Oregano
- Rosemary
- Chives
- Mint
- Coriander
Are there herb plants that can’t be planted together?
There are plants that are not ideal been placed together.
Don’t mix herb plants that like lots of water such as Chives, Mint, Chervil and Coriander with herb plants that like well-drained soil such as Rosemary, Thyme, Sage and Oregano.
Can you plant herbs directly in the ground or do they need to be in a pot?
Yes!, herbs are easy to grow and often only require a little bit of sunshine, good soil that drains well some water and a touch of fertilizer. Herb plants do enjoy been in the ground as they have more room for their roots to spread out.
Let’s get started!
Last year I put in my very first herb garden with about 5 different herbs, all I did was plant the things, add some special soil for herbs and just like that within a few weeks, my garden was looking AMAZING.
Over winter, I let my herb garden get a bit overgrown and ugly so I decided that it was now time to give it a spruce up ready for summer. My garden is located right outside our kitchen for easy access, great for adding fresh herbs to our favourite dishes.
If you are a novice gardener like me…
And want to spruce up your (or even put one in) herb garden then keep reading on for 5 things I did to spruce up my herb garden!
Step 1
Pull out weeds and any dead herbs. Cut back existing plants that got pretty big and bushy especially the parsley and sage.
Step 2
Add a vegetable mix to the existing dirt to give the old and new plants some good nutrients. I added a vegetable mix but you can also get a special mix specific for herbs.
Step 3
Plant a few new herbs. Basil, dill and chives are a few of my favourites that I added to my garden. I also placed in some more spinach as I love this stuff so it’s handy having it close to the kitchen.
Step 4
Give the garden a good watering!
Step 5
To finish off my herb garden I added in some homemade name tags so we know which herb is which. I just made mine out of a little crafting wood, with some PVA glue and a black vivid marker – super easy!
