How to make a Cafe style coffee at home!
Want to find out how to make a cafe style coffee at home?
Do you have a coffee machine?
So often we go out and make that big purchase of a coffee machine only to never figure out how to use it, is that you? Do you spend a lot of money at cafes and coffee shops buying coffee, when you could make it yourself? This post is a step by step guide to get that great cafe style coffee right in the comfort of your own home!
You need the following things:
Since these images, I have upgraded my machine to the above model and it is the best!!
A portafilter (the thing that clicks into the machine that has your freshly ground coffee in it)
either a plastic or metal tamp,
cold milk
coffee beans (you can use pre-ground coffee but I think it tastes better freshly grounded).
Don’t forget that fancy cup to give you that cafe experience.
Step 1
Add your coffee beans to your grinder. Grind the beans until they are nice and fine. Most grinders will have a coarse or fine setting – select the fine setting.
Once ground your coffee should look like this.
Step 2
Place your freshly ground coffee into the Portafilter.
Step 3
Press the coffee firmly with the tamp.
This is how the coffee should look once you have pressed it with the tamp.
Step 4
Click your portafilter into your coffee machine and place your cups underneath. My cups (with saucer) are from Kmart at $2 a pop!
Step 5
Turn that machine on! If your machine is like mine and you have to stop it yourself, then turn the machine off once your cup is about 1/4 full.
This is how your coffee should look. You should get a rust coloured crema.
Step 6
Add cold milk of your choice to your stainless steel milk jug.
Before you start frothing your milk ensure your steam wand is not clogged up. Please be careful doing this as the steam will be hot!
Step 7:
Froth that milk! Try stretching your milk first by letting air get into the milk and then steam. If your milk steamer is making an awful sound try placing the steamer into the milk further. You can usually tell when the milk to hot enough by touching the side of the stainless steel jug.
Step 8
This is the warm frothed milk. You can give the jug a few bangs on the counter to get any air bubbles out.
Step 9
Pour the milk into your cup and hopefully you get something that looks like this!
It does take practice, but it definitely gets easier once you have the hang of it. If you can master this at home you will save yourself a ton of money!
How did you go?

Saving money on coffee is exactly why I got a coffee maker. I don’t add steam milk and now my only issue is drinking too much! Beautiful photos.

Yes that is our issue too – we now drink way to much coffee. Thanks for visiting 🙂

There is nothing like a fresh cup of coffee. I always grind my coffee beans every morning. It makes a big different in the taste of the coffee.

Yes I totally agree that freshly grinding the beans makes a better tasting coffee! Thanks for visiting and your comments 🙂

My hubby is a coffee fanatic! I may need to practice this technique. I’m sure it will help me score a few brownie points, too. 🙂

Absolutely! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

Looks great! All i’m missing is a coffee bean grinder, i think you’ve convinced me to go out and grab one! 🙂

Thanks! Yes the coffee bean grinder can make a great tasting coffee. You can pick up a grinder at home decor shops (like Kmart – if you have one of those) for relatively cheap. Thanks for visiting and your comment.
