How to keep on top of Laundry when life is busy!
Lots of laundry loading up in your life?
Some people love it, and some people loathe it, and once you add a few kids to the mix it becomes never….ever…ending! We find ourselves with giant piles of clean and dirty laundry everywhere and then the clean blends in with the dirty and you can’t tell the difference so it ALL goes in the washing machine again – sound familiar?
How to keep on top of laundry when life is busy!
Today, we are diving into our washing piles and sharing our top tips to keep on top of those laundry pile mountains, so they don’t get on top of you…like literally….and then your family can’t find you, and it becomes a laundry disaster…just sayin!
1 – Do at least one load of Laundry per day!
Work it into your daily schedule a time to grab that laundry basket and pop that laundry on and make it become a daily habit. My routine every morning goes like this – Make kids lunches, sort breakfast, have a shower and get ready and then pop a load on! It doesn’t have to be morning it can be a time after work or if you are around the home during lunchtime pop it in the washing machine then.
2 – Set a timer or an alarm
If your biggest issue is forgetting about the washing that you have put on, then set a timer. These days most of us have our phone nearby so use the timer setting or set the alarm to go off when your washing machine goes off. If leaving things on the line or in the dryer is the problem set the alarm to remind yourself to take it out.
3 – Gets the kids involved!
Make it part of the kids’ daily chores to help with the laundry. They can be responsible for sorting, folding and putting away. The sooner they learn this new skill, the sooner they can start helping to get the laundry piles down.
4 – Utilise a local laundromat
If your washing pile is so ginormous that your poor machines won’t handle it, bundle it all up and take to your local laundromat. Yes, it may cost a bit extra doing it this way but the machines are HUGE, and you can often get all the laundry washed and dried in one big load. Take a book, grab a coffee, leave the kids with dad and enjoy some kid-free time at the laundromat!
5 – Have a clothing bin for each person in the house
Once the washing is dry, don’t waste time folding it all up, just throw each person items into their designated basket like these ones from Amazon and make them responsible for folding and putting away.
6 – Allocate days to do extra items!
Throughout your week, try allocating time to wash specific item above your daily one load. An example of this is:
Monday – Main bedroom bedding
Tuesday – kids bedrooms bedding
and
Thursday – Towels
This can allow you to not feel so overwhelmed with trying to complete so much laundry in a day.
7 – Don’t wash items every..single…day!
Get all of the family in the habit of checking the items they have worn that day and decide if they need to be washed. If my youngest has been to Kindergarten, then I do wash his clothes every day as they are covered in sand, paint and…kindy germs!
However, my school kids have to wear their own clothes to school (aka no uniform), but their jerseys and pants don’t get very dirty so they can definitely get another day out of them. Doing this will drastically reduce the amount of washing going in daily.
8 – Use a washing line
If you have access to a washing line, use it on those blustery days where you have done more than one load. This allows the dryer to be freed up for dryer items, and the wind will dry everything else in no time.
9 – Purchase items that require less maintenance
Keep your beautiful, difficult to wash items for special occasions and look at wearing low maintenance items daily. You can now get clothing that requires no or little ironing.
Finding clothes that can be washed with other things and if need be thrown in the dryer is going to save you a bucket load of time.
So, there you have it – that’s our 9 tips on how to keep on top of laundry when life is busy – have you got any to share?
