Toys are all part of having Kids

I get that – I even get a tad excited about new toys that the kids get. However, there comes a point where I can only handle so much toy clutter!

So, I would go on all sorts of missions to try and get our kids toys organized.  We already had an extra 12 cubby shelving unit (Like this one) that I pinched from our office. However, you can get similar ones from places like Amazon.

We then purchased ten folding material boxes exactly like these – super great bargain you will want to get some!

I printed out all my toy categories onto the card and then covered them with the clear book cover. If you have a laminator, use this instead to protect the card and make it last longer.

We then attached these to the storage boxes and proceeded to organize all of the toys.

To help you out create a range of toy categories like this:

  • Puzzles
  • Blocks
  • Baby Toys
  • Farm Set
  • Paw Patrol/Fireman Sam
  • Trains and Train Tracks
  • Vehicles
  • Shapes & Alphabets
  • Role Play
  • Toy Story (we had the entire cast of this one)

Lego has its own storage system!

At the moment for Lego, because we have so much of it, we use a big under a bed storage container.  We found this an excellent way to store the Lego as it’s easy to find things and easy to put stuff away.  .

We use plastic storage containers like these ones from Amazon. They are super handy to use and easy for the kids to drag out. They also fit a whole heaps of Lego Blocks which is perfect as they are all over the ground.

Other Toy Organizer Ideas

When our kids were younger our playroom had inbuilt draws, so each draw housed things that I needed to get out for the kids.  These things include play-doh, arts, and crafts, leap pads and tablets and board games.  So if you have a spare drawer unit, utilize it for kids things that they need to ask for!

Sorting toys by category is a great idea. Those drawers you have would be super useful. My husband and I just spent 4 hrs cleaning out our kids’ playroom today. What I’m going to try to do from now on is if something new comes in something has got to go. Otherwise you end up with WAY too much stuff.

Love it! My son is only a few months old but I’m already cringing at the thought of my house being covered in toys. My goal is to start organizing NOW so that we never get in over our heads.

Aah… Lego! My youngest two sons are at the lego stage – the 10 year old has a big storage box full of lego pieces but he still insists that he has a small pile by his bed that he makes random models from when he can’t sleep at night or first thing in the morning. His 8 year old brother, on the other hand, makes the large models to be on constant display – he has a 5 shelf bookshelf in his room displaying his creations plus around the edges of my lounge are the rest of his castle creations – which are a source of amusement to our kittens! And yes, I’ve hoovered up bits of Lego by mistake! It does improve though honest – and I can’t wait to have a toy free lounge! (before grandkids arrive hopefully!)

Oh yes I can relate – my eldest son like to do the same thing and have a Lego pile beside his bed that he makes random things from if he can’t sleep – isn’t that funny! I also can’t wait to have a toy free lounge – its great having a play room but the lounge still manages to get covered in toys! Thanks for your comments 🙂
