Destination Martinborough New Zealand
Destination Martinborough – New Zealand
This is not a paid review.
A few weeks ago we were lucky to escape the kids for an overnight trip away to Martinborough.
It was so exciting for us as it was the first time in well over a year that it was just my husband and me off on a little adventure!
Martinborough is located in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand and is about 1 ½ hours drive north of Wellington. It was the third time that we’ve visited the area and every time we go back I just love it even more. If you haven’t been there, it is a place that deserves a stopover.
For some reason, we only seem to go to the area in Winter. However, I can image since its vineyard central that this place would be stunning in Summer!
Hello, Greytown.
On the way to Martinborough, we decided to stop by in an amazing little town called Greytown.
The beautifully restored buildings lining the main street make it worth a visit, and there is plenty of places to stop by for lunch and many fabulous shops to browse.
When we first arrived, we were feeling hungry, so we visited a place called the French Baker. And seriously this place is super delicious. The shop smelled amazing with yummy pastries and bread available.
We decided to indulge in a delicious custard filled donut!
See the French Bakers website.
After lunch, we decided to have a stroll and browse some shops. The boutique style shops in Greytown are a dream with my all time favourite; The Lolly Jar – this place has lollies galore, and if you are like me and have a super sweet tooth it will be one of your favourites too. You simply put on a glove, grab a bowl and fill to your heart’s content.
There is plenty to see in this little town including Cobblestones Museum, Schoc chocolates, Kahikatea Gardens and some fantastic homeware stores.
As leaving Greytown, we decided to grab from Main Street deli café a coffee, and seriously they had the best coffee ever – definitely worth a stop by!
As we head to Martinborough
On this particular day, the weather was cold and grey, but our primary destination for some R&R is a beautiful place called Peppers Parehua Country Estate.
Upon opening our door to our fabulous secluded cottage, we came across a stunning open plan living/dining/kitchen area. The lights were all turned on, and the TV set to the music channel which created the perfect atmosphere.
The room contained a lovely open gas fire, comfy sofas, and small décor items throughout that added a homely feel.
Out from the living room was a big bi-fold door that opened up to a deck and the green countryside with snow capped mountains off in the distant. Just down from the deck was a hot tub – perfect for this cold winters day!
Through to the main bedroom, we come upon a luxurious king-sized bed, a bay window and plenty of storage space for luggage. Then from there is a small dressing room which goes through to a toilet and a very spacious bathroom.
Peppers Parehua features include The Pavillion Restaurant, Spa Boutique, Tennis Court, Outdoor swimming pool and Retro bicycles for hire.
We spent the afternoon lazing about and enjoying the total peace and quiet in front of the warm fire. As our room was so peaceful and private, we chose to dine that night by room service which did not disappoint at all.
Peppers Parehua provided a comfortable, quiet, private and relaxing stay which is much needed when you have a busy life with three children. It was the perfect place to escape to, and we will definitely be going back!
The rural town of Martinborough
With a population of 1500 Martinborough is a small and friendly community that’s known for its world-class wines. We spent a bit of time exploring Martinborough, and there is plenty to do within the region including:
- Hire a bike from Green Jersey cycle tours and visit the many Vineyards
- Spend an evening at Circus Cinema restaurant and bar
- Take a wine tour with Martinborough Wine Tours
- Visit the local shops.
- Perhaps a spot of golf is what you need.
- Enjoy a meal at one of the cafes
After a lovely quick overnight trip away from our kids it was the time that we made the journey home. Martinborough always meets our expectations, and we are looking forward to returning.
